National Headlines:

• America’s space program is being forced to tighten its belt.  After the glory days of the 1960s when the US beat the Russians into space, NASA is cutting 50,000 jobs and stretching the remaining seven moon landings to only two a year.

State Headlines:

• The state legislature will consider changing the term length for the state’s governor from two years to a single four-year term.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Karen Moulton, a ninth grader at Simmons Junior High in Aberdeen, was crowned the 1970 Junior Snow Queen.  Renee Retzlaff from Monroe Junior High was the runner up

• The J.L.W. Zietlow (Zeet-Low) Council of the Telephone Pioneers held their annual New Year’s Tea for all telephone company employees and retirees at the new telephone building on the corner of South First Street and 4th Avenue.

• Contract awards for construction of a new facility on the campus of Northern State College have been delayed because all bids came in over the amount budgeted.  The building will include a 1000 seat auditorium, recital hall and special areas for music and theater classes.  Target date for completion of the project is fall of 1971 (Ultimately Johnson Fine Arts)

• Debra Engelstad of Aberdeen Central High School has been named the DAR Good Citizen award winner from Brown County.  Connie Kurle was name the DAR winner in Edmunds County

National Headlines:

• Washington DC is preparing for the upcoming inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.  The cost of attending any of the “invitation-only” inaugural balls is $25 per person--outrageous!

State Headlines:

• The State Board of Corrections and Charities met to discuss possible uses for the school building in Gary once the state’s blind school moves to Aberdeen next summer.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Groton freshmen Charlotte Craig and Kent Johnson were chosen as the new king and queen of  Groton’s annual Canival of Silver Skates.

• Democrat Ken Holum of Groton will serve in the Kennedy cabinet as Ass’t Secretary of Agriculture.

• Dr. Paul Leon has joined the radiology practice of Dr. Paul McCarthy.  Their offices are located in the Citizens Building in downtown Aberdeen.

• Charleen Fuhrmann of Warner was crowned the SD Snow Queen last night.  Frosty was revealed to be Paul Green.

• Dennis Adams, a junior at Aberdeen Central High School, is the newly elected president of the South Dakota Association of Student Councils.  He will represent SD at the group’s national convention in Williamsburg VA in February.

• At Sacred Heart Junior High, Rory King, the out-going secretary/treasurer, of the Sodality group turned his record books over to Kevin Callihan who will serve in that office for second semester.

January 16, 1955

National Headlines:

• The Navy announced that its first atomic submarine “the Nautilus” would start her sea trials tomorrow.  The 2800 ton sub has a crew of 11 officers and 85 men.

State Headlines:

• The state racing commission set a 60-day season for the dog track in Rapid City.  Horse racing in Aberdeen will take place June 17-19.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Marge Davis from Rapid City was crowned the 1955 Snow Queen last night.  Frosty was Ed Downs.

• A new curbside mail box featuring a snout that extends to the street is now being used near the post office.  This allows drivers to deposit mail without leaving their cars.  This is the first such “snout” mailbox to be installed in the state.

• “Dine and Dance for Polio” will be held at the Roof Garden,  Dancing will be from 9pm - 1am with music provided by the Harry Eisele Orchestra.  Tickets are $4.00 per couple and all inclusive.  All proceeds from the event will go to the March of Dimes Fund.

• The National Horsemen Trail Riders, a non-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding historic Ft. Sisseton, will aske the SD legislature for $10,000 for improvements to the hospital building at the Fort.

• Ace Appliance has new Speed Queen wringer washers for $109.00 plus trade in.

• Marjorie Main and Chill Wills star as Ma & Pa Kettle in “Ricochet Romance” now showing at the Orpheum.  A “Tarzan” double feature starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan is playing at the Lyric while Randolph Scott and Barbara Britain star in “Gunfighters” showing at the World.

• The Voyager 2 spacecraft has discovered six more moons orbiting the planet Uranus bringing the total known moons to 12.  Scientists believe the planet may have as many as 30 moons, more than any other planet in the solar systerm.

• Onida’s Tom Byrum shot a 76 in the second day of play at the Bob Hope Classic.  Craig Stadler, tournament leader, shot a 65.

State Headlines:

• A plan to require water fowl hunters to purchase a $2.00 habitat restoration stamp prior to the fall hunting season has been introduced in the SD legislature.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Jim Wooster of Sioux Falls will be the featured speaker at the Redfield Chamber banquet

• Tony Portra hit a pair of last second free throws to help his Central Eagles defeat Watertown 63-55.

• Aberdeen’s hottest new group, The Black Velvet Band made up of Mike Pfeiffer, Steve Stulken, Kim Wahlen and William Hoffman, will be playing at the American Legion  this weekend.

• Top hits on area turntables:

January 18, 1980

National Headlines:

• Barry Manilow was named top male vocalist of the year at the American Music Awards.  Michael Jackson was named top male soul vocalist.

• Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year” was Ayatollah Khomeini

State Headlines:

• Some of the bills to be considered by the 1980 SD legilature include measures to:
• Prohibit the sale or use of radar detectors;
• raise the legal age to drink low-point beer to 19 from 18;
• require all children under the age of 13 to sit in the back seat and wear restraining devices;
• and, increase entrance fees at state parks from $4 to $6.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Wrestlers from Roncalli and Central are preparing for their weekend matchup.  The Cavalier team includes:  Al Hickman, Dave Mahoney, Chuck Sterzinger and Tom Mattern.  Some of the Eagle wrestlers are:  Roger Dell, Kary Haar, Jeff Ell, and Steve Crosier.

• Selby defeated Cresbard 50-48 at the Yellowstone Train Conference Tournament.  High scorers for Selby were Todd Jordre with 20 and Jeff Wolff with 12.  High scorers for the Comets were:  Todd Carda with 22 and Paul Holt with 10.

• Warner defeated Frederick 92 65 in the Lake Region Conference Tournament.  Scott Rozell had 25 and Wade Rozell had 18 for Warner.  Wade Van Dover had 26 for Frederick and Dave Hinz added 10.

• Wendy Swanhosrt scored 16 as the Northern Wolves defeated Augustana 100-77.  Myrna Becker was the Wolves’ high scorer with 23.
