National Headlines:

•  Ed Sullivan, host of a television variety show of the same name, died today at age 72 after a long bout with cancer.  The Ed Sullivan Show was a Sunday night staple on network TV for 23 years.

• The World Series started today with the LA Dodgers taking on the Oakland “A's."  (The “A's" ultimately won 5 games to take the title)

State Headlines:

• Recent polls indicate that Senator George McGovern will be successful in his bid for a third term as a South Dakota Senator.  His opponent is Republican Leo Thorsness.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Tickets are still available for the Jim Stafford concert scheduled for next week in the Civic Arena.  The NSC Union Operations Committee is sponsoring the concert.

• Guys, Osborn’s Menswear in the Super City Mall has received a new shipment of plaid, double knit bell-bottom slacks—many colorful and bold plaids to choose from.  Some slacks also feature deep cuffs.

• Area homecoming royalty – in Frederick it’s Tracy Lahr and Wayne Jarvi; in Langford it’s Ron Wegleitner and Tammy Barnes; at Northwestern it’s Colleen Spear and Craig Smith and in Gettysburg it’s Carol Jensen and Dean Hanson.

• Seniors at Hecla High School are busy planning a carnival.   Proceeds from the event will help fund the yearbook.

• What we’re reading:  “Centennial” by James Michener; “All the President’s Men” by Bernstein and Woodward; and “A Bridge Too Far” by Cornelius Ryan.

National Headlines:

• Congress adjourned today after failing to approve a measure to allow presidential candidates to debate on television.  Congress will not reconvene until January 2, so its work is complete for this year.

• Funeral arrangements are pending following yesterday’s death of actress Bea Benaderet who played Kate Bradley on “Petticoat Junction.”  She died of cancer.

State Headlines:

• There are seven laws and amendments on the South Dakota ballot this year—the most in 20 years.  One of these would bar the state from having Day Light Savings time during the summer.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Local officials for Northwestern Public Service are asking people to refrain from using company power poles as bulletin boards.  Currently most poles are covered with political posters and the tacks and nails used to mount the posters are a safety hazard for linemen.

• Grocery specials at Fairway Foods in the Super City Mall.  Rump Roasts $.75 per pound, 2 six-packs of Coke or 7-UP just $.89 with bottle deposit, 20 pounds of potatoes $.59, 7 cans of Pork and Beans for $1.00, 12 oranges $.49, and large head lettuce $.09 each.

• Prairie Players Community Theater is holding auditions for “Farewell, Farewell, Eugene” next week at the School for the Blind.

• Montgomery Ward, Bostwicks, Osco Drug and Penneys, all on Main Street Aberdeen, will remain open after the Gypsy Day parade until 7PM for your shopping convenience.

National Headlines:

• Bing Crosby passed away yesterday in Spain after playing a round of golf.  Today his family is traveling there to return his body to the US for burial.  Crosby was 73.

• New York leads Los Angeles 2-1 in the World Series.  The Yankees eventually won 6 games to take the series.

State Headlines:

• The state Game Fish and Parks department has set the big-horn sheep hunting season and will issue only 6 licenses to SD resident hunters.  A lottery will be held for the licenses and the hunt will take place in Custer State Park in December.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Today is Gypsy Day.  Reigning over the 1977 festivities are Sam Holderby and Diane Goethal.  Bob Beatle is the new King of the Gyps.  There are 135 entries in the parade including 40 area bands.  The Hoven High School band took top honors winning both the street and field marching competitions.  Joel Swisher, head football coach at Augustana, was named this year’s outstanding coach.

• Area homecoming royal couples are:  Kathy Taylor and James Patterson in Conde, Carla Engelhart and Kent Reisdorph in Frederick, Yvonne Gillick and Blake Hoffman in Ipswich, and Mark Beck and Valerie Jones in Britton.

• The Aberdeen Central Eagles girls’ basketball team defeated Huron 28-26 thanks to two last minute free throws from Charlotte Miller.

• The NSC marching band is planning a trip to Winnipeg, Canada, to perform at half time of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers professional football team.  Chuck Dresbach of Groton is the drum major, Kelly Kirkus is the baton twirler.  Dennis DaFoe is the band’s director.

• The Aberdeen Area Barbershop Chorus is preparing for its concert “Strictly Barbershop” scheduled for later this month.  The concert will be held at the Civic Arena.

National Headlines:

• Things in America are getting bigger—including us!  Nearly one-third of us are now obese compared to only 25% in 1960.  Today there are 359 WalMart Superstores in the nation, in 1988 there was only one!  In 1991 car dealerships nationwide sold 37,400 SUVs—in 1996 they sold over 243,000.

• “ER” is the top rated TV show followed by “Seinfeld”, “Veronica’s Closet”, “Home Improvement” and “Friends.”

State Headlines:

• A new women’s prison will open in Pierre in November and the warden is expecting 140-150 inmates will be transferred there shortly after it opens.  The facility can house 180 women.  Cost of the prison came in at $8.6 million.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The Tri-State Corn Processors plans to build a $9 million ethanol plant near Rosholt.  Stock in the venture is available at a cost of $2.50 per share.  The group hopes to begin construction of the plant later this fall.  When complete it will employ 24 people and use 2 million bushels of corn annually to produce 5 million gallons of ethanol.

• The Redfield Chamber of Commerce purchased a fiberglass pheasant from the Wheaton, MN, Chamber of Commerce for $650.  The bird is 12 feet long and stands 13 or 14 feet tall.  It will be mounted on a trailer and become Redfield’s official mascot, traveling to area parades and events.

• Jason Draft and Brian Beaner are the new deputies for the Edmunds County Sheriff’s department.

• The Hoven High School Future Homemakers of America Club is planning a Halloween party for kids through grade 4.  There will be a costume contest, spook house, games, prizes and treats.  There will be no charge for this event.

• Jody’s Victorian Accents in Bath is celebrating its first anniversary with specials throughout the store.

• The Aberdeen Senior Center has a new computer available to members who can use it to send e-mails or look things up on the World Wide Web.  Special classes on how to use the machine will be held soon.

October 17, 1986

National Headlines:

• This year’s World Series match up features the New York Mets against the Boston Red Socks.  It took both teams the full 7 games to win the right to represent their respective leagues in the series.  The Mets ultimately took the series 4 games to 3.

State Headlines:

• This year’s race for US Senate is the most expensive in the state’s history.  Jim Abdnor and Tom Daschle have spent a combined $4.2 million to date in their efforts to win the race.  Tim Johnson and Dale Bell, candidates for US House of Representatives, have each spent more than $500,000 on their respective campaigns so far.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Pheasant season opens tomorrow and bird counts are down according to local conservation officers due to a March blizzard that killed many adult birds.  A cold, wet spring also hindered this year’s new bird hatch.

• Members of the Britton Community Theater will perform “The Odd Couple” several times this weekend.  Tickets are $4 each.  Dinner theaters will be presented twice and tickets for those performances are $12.50.

• Corn prices in the area, currently at $1.27 per bushel, may drop to under $1.00 since elevators have no storage available for this year’s bumper crop.  The last time prices dipped below $1.00 was in 1971 when a bushel of corn sold for only $.94. 

• Rejuvenation work is nearly complete on water tower located near the Brown County Fairgrounds.  Two to three feet of rust residue and chipped paint were removed from the tower’s interior.  Crews used 170 gallons of paint to cover the exterior surface of the tower.

• Hunters, get your supplies at Sandvig’s.  Specials include “Camo” parkas $11.95, a steel ammo box $5.95, a gun cleaning kit $6.98, and Winchester 16 gauge 6 shot shells just $4.99 per box.

• Michael Pfeiffer and Janna Scott star as Danny and Sandy in Northern’s production of “Grease”, which opens next week.  Beth Bauer of Aberdeen will play Rizzo, leader of the Pink Ladies.

• The Eureka PTA will sponsor a book fair and booth for children to learn how to make an emergency call.
