COMMUNICATIONS (call sign BC3)

Aberdeen Area Law Enforcement Becomes First in South Dakota to launch On-line Crime Alerting and Mapping with CrimeReports.com
Citizens empowered with near real-time neighborhood crime information available 24/7/365.

Aberdeen, SD March 20, 2009 – Brown County Communications – Public Engines today announced that the Aberdeen Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office and the Groton Police Department became the first law enforcement agencies in the state of South Dakota to sign a partnership with CrimeReports.com to share neighborhood crime incident information with community members via the Internet.  (Click for the complete press release)

The Brown County Communications Center was developed in 1994 as a mutual effort between The City of Aberdeen and Brown County.  The two entities combined their resources to better serve the community.  By providing one centralized location for dispatch and one number for citizens to call a great deal of confusion has been eliminated.

The Brown County Regional Communications Center operates a 24 hour-a-day Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).  The Center provides Enhanced 911 services to the over 35,000 residents and over 280,000 visitors to Brown County each year, and cover 1,700 square miles.

The Brown County Communications Center receives calls and relays information to the appropriate agency, saving seconds.  Saving seconds does not seem like a lot but there are those occasions where seconds do save lives.

 About 911 Communications

The Brown County Regional Communications Center provides a central location for the public and all emergency services to report and receive emergency assistance. This is achieved primarily through the use of the emergency phone number 911. The call volume for this emergency line averages over 900 calls per month. We also handle about 6,000 calls each month on non-emergency lines.

We provide efficient communications and dispatching for both routine and emergency situations within Brown County for county, city, and state law-enforcement, public safety and emergency agencies.  From the communications center, we dispatch assistance to the public from the following agencies:

      Aberdeen Police Department
      Brown County Sheriff’s Office
      Groton Police Department
      Aberdeen Fire and Rescue
      Frederick Ambulance
      Hecla Ambulance
      Aberdeen Rural Fire Department
      Bath Rural Fire Department
      Claremont Fire Department
      Columbia Fire Department
      Frederick Fire Department
      Groton Fire Department
      Groton Rescue Squad
      Hecla Fire Department
      Hutterville Fire Department
      Stratford Fire Department
      Warner Fire Department

Staff personnel are certified through the SD Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission. They are also required to be trained and certified through the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch.

The backbone of our emergency system is the 911 phone system and related equipment. This system allows our dispatch personnel to have visual information regarding the call location immediately upon receiving the call. This is immensely helpful in today's environment. Additionally, emergency responders assigned to that particular location are displayed for the telecommunicator to have immediate knowledge of where and who to respond to the specific location.

 How to Call 911

  • REMAIN CALM and SPEAK CLEARLY.

  • Location- Know the location of the incident.  The location is the single most important piece of information emergency responders need.  Make sure every member of your family knows their address and phone number.  Include information such as the color of the residence, nearby landmarks, etc.
  • What Is Going On-What is happening or has happened that you need responders for?
  • The operator will ask you questions.  Be patient.  They have been trained to get the information that the responders need.
  • Make sure that your house number is clearly visible from the road.
  • Explain what the emergency is.
  • Stay on the line, a 911 operator will assist you.
