April 21, 1964

National Headlines:

  • Workmen are feverishly trying to ready the New York World’s Fair for its official opening in two days.  It is anticipated that 90% of the multi-million dollar exposition will be ready for the ribbon cutting ceremony.  President Johnson will address over 16,000 special guests invited to the opening ceremony of the fair whose theme is “Peace Through Understanding.”

State Headlines:

  • Homestake Mining Company reported first quarter earnings just shy of $1 million, which translates to a per share dividend of $.49

  • A Legislative Research Committee has been formed to study the possibility of converting SD’s colleges and universities into a single university system.  One president would administer the system from an office headquartered in Pierre.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Aberdeen’s Tempo store is ready for its Grand Opening scheduled for tomorrow at 10am.

  • Tempo is the first retail business to open in Aberdeen’s new Super City Shopping Center. 

  • The old YWCA building on the corner of South Main and 6th Avenue will soon be torn down to make room for the new Aberdeen TV and Appliance Building. 

  • Gordon Campbell is the new president of the Aberdeen Jaycees. 

  • Groundbreaking ceremonies for the John P. Shirk Memorial Rest Home in Faulkton took place today.  The estimated cost of the structure is $285,000. 

  • “Golden Memories” is the theme of the 1964 prom at Central High School.  The grand march will begin at 10pm and be led by senior class president Lorie Long and her escort.  The Sinfonians Dance Band from Northern will provide music for the dance. 

  • Most members of this year’s Aberdeen Pheasant baseball are in town, but general manager Cal Ripkin Sr. has not yet arrived.  He’s in Mitchell having repairs done on his trailer but expects to be in Aberdeen by early afternoon.  Reminder--there are a limited number of  Pheasant box seat season tickets left.  Your ticket will guarantee a box seat for this season’s Pheasant’s vs. Baltimore Oriole’s game. 

  • Groton Boys Staters are Joel Hornaman and David Von Wald. 

  • Top Records for the week:  “Can’t Buy Me Love” by the Beatles, “Twist & Shout” by the Beatles, “Hello Dolly” by Louis Armstrong, and “The Way You Do the Things You Do” by the Temptations. 

 

April 22, 1977

National Headlines:

  • Sonny and Cher have decided to discontinue their TV show after this season. 

  • Americans collecting Social Security will receive a 5.9% “cost of living” increase to their monthly payments beginning July 1. 

State Headlines:

  • Elvis Presley will perform at the grand opening of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City in June.  Tickets are on sale now for $15.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Aberdeen’s newest lounge, The Bar-N, is now open on North 8th Avenue near the sports complex.  The structure was built as a barn in 1906 and recently remodeled to accommodate the needs of a bar and lounge.

  • Olympic Gold Medallist Billy Mills will be the featured speaker at Aberdeen Central’s graduation exercises to be held in May.  Mills won his medal in 1964 in the 10,000-meter run.

  • The city forestry department is waging war on bark beetles in an effort to curb their deadly effect on the city’s elm trees.  Residents are urged to remove dead elms within the next 10 days so the beetle larvae left in the bark last year cannot hatch.

  • The Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce announced its first annual Moonlight Madness promotion that is intended to draw thousands of area shoppers to Aberdeen retail stores.

  • The Aberdeen Relays will leave its tradition home, Simmons Field, and be held at the Clark Swisher Field in the new athletic complex north of Aberdeen.

  • The Rev. Robert Dunn will be leaving Aberdeen’s St. Mark’s Episcopal Church to become the rector at St. Andrew’s Church in Omaha.  Rev. Dunn has served the Aberdeen congregation since November of 1963.

  • The Aberdeen Modelaires, a club for model airplane enthusiasts, has been organized and plans to put on flying shows and demonstrations this summer.  The group currently has a display at The Toy Chest at 419 S Main.

  • All You Can Eat Sunday Smorgasbord at Leo’s Good Food just $2.80 for adults and $1.75 for kids.

  • Plan now to attend the “Country Super Star Explosion” at the Bismarck Civic Center in May.  Featured artists include Ronnie Milsap, The Statler Brothers, and Tammy Wynette.  Tickets just $6.00.

  • Now showing:  At the Capitol--Barbra Streisand and Kris Kirstofferson in “A Star is Born.”

 

April 23, 1986

National Headlines:

  • Producers of ABC’s “Good Morning America” announced plans to broadcast from Mt. Rushmore on May 8.  Co-hosts David Hartman and Joan Lunden will be positioned on the visitor’s center terrace with the monument in the background.  Weatherman Dave Murray is expected to give his forecasts from atop the monument.  All this because Mr. Rushmore has been named one of America’s top vacation spots.

State Headlines:

  • State Fair officials have announced the grandstand entertainment for this year’s fair:  George Strait, Marie Osmond, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Bobby Rydell, and the Beach Boys (back by popular demand).

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Flood warnings have been put into effect along the James River.  Water is expected to reach a 14’ level by Friday--flood stage is 11’. 

  • Aberdeen has a new city commissioner, Bill Meidinger, who received 58% of the vote in yesterday’s election.  Meidinger’s opponent was Cal Engel.

  • Jury selection is moving very slowly in the murder/kidnapping trial of Todd Miller who is accused in the disappearance and killing of Michael Kinney of Aberdeen last spring.

  • Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Holum Expo building, a multi-purpose livestock facility, at the Brown County Fairgrounds will take place at 5:30pm tomorrow evening. 

  • The Presentation College “Spring Fling Dance” is this weekend.  Admission is free to PC students, $1 to Northern students and $2 to the general public.  Music provided by “Black Velvet”

  • See Ultra Incorporated for a new Apple IIc computer for only $825 or $41 per month for 24 months.

  • Reservations are now being taken for Aberdeen’s first annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.  Join Mayor Del Janusz at the Convention Center at the Sheraton Inn.  Single seats-$5.00, table of 8 - $40.00

  • Warner’s Mark Rozell is among 10 finalists for this year’s Mr. Basketball award.  Huron’s Tom Nieman is also a finalist.

April 24, 1980

National Headlines:

  • US Representative John Anderson of Illinois has dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination and announced he will continue his campaign as an Independent.  He believes there is enough dissatisfaction with President Carter and the leading Republican hopeful, Ronald Reagan, for him to garner enough votes to become the first Independent candidate to win the White House.

  • Tonight Show host, Johnny Carson, has purchased the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for $103 million.

State Headlines:

  • Dale Bell of Spearfish is challenging incumbent SD Representative James Abdnor in the Republican primary to determine the state’s Republican Senate candidate to challenge Democratic Senator George McGovern in the fall election.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Tickets are now on sale for the 5th annual Veblen School Award Banquet.  Clark Swisher, athletic director at Northern State, will be the featured speaker.  Gordon Nelson, a Veblen businessman, will be presented the Honored Alumnus Award during the banquet.

  • Fewer teams are registered to participate in the Aberdeen Relays than in past seasons.  So far 53 teams will participate compared to 80 last year.

  • Aberdeen Roncalli boy’s basketball coach, Jim Stephenson, has been named the school’s activities director for the next school year.

  • Mike Sweetman picked up wins in singles and doubles matches for the Northern tennis team in today’s meet with SDSU at Brookings.  Brother Mark Sweetman and John Carrels were singles and doubles winners for Roncalli’s tennis team in its match against Aberdeen Central.

  • Cresbard’s Louis Geditz won both the one-mile and two-mile runs at the Groton Kiwanis Track meet today.  In the same meet, Ann Marske of Frederick was named the top female athlete and Neil Morgan of Warner was named the top male participant. 

  • Cary Hornaman and Scott Bosanko are co-chairmen for this year’s March of Dimes Walk.  The 18-mile route starts at Aldrich Park, proceeds to the filtration plant and then returns to the park.  “Poop out” vehicles will be available along the route for anyone needing (or wanting) to drop out.

  • The Aberdeen City Commission is considering a petition from the Industrial Park and 3-M for annexation into the city limits.

April 25, 1975

National Headlines:

  • The Food and Drug Administration has granted the nation’s corporate beverage giants permission to produce billions of disposable plastic bottles for soda and beer.  Although this may create an environmental nightmare, the FDA has power to ban products only if they pose a hazard directly related to personal health and/or safety.

State Headlines:

  • South Dakota’s oldest newspaper, the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan” published a 100 page centennial edition that outlines the history of the publication.  The Dakotan’s first issue was printed on April 26, 1875, on just four pages.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • The Aberdeen Area Bicentennial Committee announced its plans to sponsor a bicentennial logo contest.  Any Brown County resident may enter and the winner will be awarded a $25 prize.

  • The Groton High School music department will hold its spring concert this weekend.  Dennis Defoe directs the concert band with the assistance of Miss Deb Stoner from Northern who is his practice teacher.  Mary Marion directs the concert choir and various vocal groups that will perform.

  • Sears can satisfy all your electronic needs--an 8-track player with full-size record changer is only $128, an electronic slide rule calculator is only $79, and a 19” portable color TV is only $298.

  • Today is the grand opening of Forseth Insurance Services at 24 4th Ave SE in Aberdeen.

  • Garretson voters defeated a proposal for a $495,000 bond to build additional classrooms at the high school.

  • The Redfield post office has two firsts--its first female mail carrier and its first motorized vehicles for mail delivery

  • The Aberdeen Elks Chorus bicentennial show, “This is My Country,” will be performed a second time due to popular demand.  Narrators for the script written by Don Hall are Jim Ewing and Craig Golz.  Tickets are $2 per person and available at all local banks.

  • Sign up for Belly Dancing classes at the YWCA--it’s great exercise.  Beginning and Intermediate classes available.

  •  KKAA will be broadcasting live from the city dump today--a radio first.  Tel Tofflemire will be on site from 8 - 5 during Aberdeen Clean-Up Day.  All dumping fees will be waived today.
