August 25, 1962

National Headlines:

• Scientists at Cape Canaveral plan to launch Mariner 2, a spacecraft designed to travel 182 million miles to probe Venus, tomorrow morning.  If successful, the space ship will pass within 10,000 miles of Venus on December 14, and its electronic instruments will begin taking readings of the planet.

• Bunker Hill Air Force Base in Peru, Indiana, sent notification to people in the flight patterns of it B58 Hustler planes to expect two sonic booms each day this week as the planes travel through the area. 

State Headlines:

• Maintenance officials at the State Capitol building in Pierre blame recent sonic booms for a series of leaks that have occurred in the dome of the capitol building.  Yesterday a chunk of concrete weighing about three pounds fell from the interior of the dome.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Make plans now to attend the upcoming Pheasant Festival in Aberdeen September 9-15.  Headline entertainment will be the Mills Brothers.  Other entertainment acts are  on the schedule every night as well as the big, exciting Main Street Midway with 40 safe and thrilling rides for the whole family.  Reserved tickets for the shows $1.50 - $2.50, general admission $1.00

• The Aberdeen swimming pool will close for the season tomorrow.  Over 58,400 people used the facility this year.

• School opened in Aberdeen yesterday and the student population is 4,999 or 116 higher than last year.

• Don’t miss Duane Eddie and The Rebels at the Civic Arena this weekend.  Eddie is the winner of 8 gold records and 4 gold albums to date.

• Loel Lust Chevrolet is having its biggest sale ever and will be open until 10:30 pm the next three nights.  The huge searchlight will be lighting the sky on those three evenings from 7:30pm to 10:30pm as well.

• Aberdeen Central High School football coach Don Reshetar has only 7 returning letterman this season including guard Tom Tonner.

• Hi-top and Lo-cut converse gym shoes available at Webb’s Shoes for only $4.95 a pair.

• Students in Leola will attend classes in a variety of buildings in town while construction continues on their new school.  Band practice will be held in the Masonic Temple.  It is doubtful any basketball games will be played in Leola this season, a search is continuing for a site to hold practices though.

August 26, 1971

National Headlines:

• Women’s liberation groups across the county marched and demonstrated to call attention to their cause.  The group is seeking equality in political power, education, and employment opportunities.

• Julie Nixon Eisenhower has retired from her teaching job two days after it started because of a broken toe suffered when a steel book cart fell onto her foot.

State Headlines:

• Governor Richard Kneip signed a proclamation today declaring September “Young Voter Registration Month”.  The target audience for this effort will include all 18, 19 and 20 year-olds in the state.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Aberdeen’s newest restaurant, County Kitchen, will open on September 1 at 2210 6th Ave SE.  It will offer 24-hour service and employ 50-60 people.

• Aberdeen will be getting a new federal building with a price tag of over $8 million.  The building will feature underground parking for some of the 391 persons employed within it.

• The first of three apartment complexes in Aberdeen’s new Mel Ros Addition is expected to by open by October.  The 40-unit complex will feature units with  2, 3, and 4 bedrooms.

• The last dance at Blue Dog Inn at Waubay will be this weekend.  The Young Raiders will provide music.

• The new 1972 model Harley Davidsons are now on display at Mel’s Harley Davidson in Aberdeen.

• Osborn’s men’s wear is now open in the Super City Shopping Center.  Come in to register for an 8 track player and AM-FM receiver valued at $150.00

• Presentation College sophomores requested that freshman orientation be changed to coincide with homecoming activities in late October.  One of the highlights of PC homecoming each year is the “powder puff” football game between the freshman and sophomore girls.

• Students at Langford High School elected the following to lead their activities:  Student Council president Sheila Bruns, Senior Class President Don Ogren, Junior Class President Jean Ogren, Sophomore Class President David Kristofferson and Freshman Class President Martin Micko.

August 27, 1968

National Headlines:

• At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Vice President Hubert Humphrey leads the delegate count over South Dakota Senator George McGovern and Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy.

• President Richard Nixon and his vice president Spiro Agnew were nominated at their party’s national convention in Miami Beach, Florida last week.

State Headlines:

• A new $2.7 million classroom building on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings is on schedule to be completed by June, 1969.  The building will house the home ec, nursing, English and foreign language departments.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Register at the Orpheum Theater in Aberdeen to win a 15 volume Britannica Junior encyclopedia.  Winner will be announced this weekend.

• Mrs. Dorothy Gisi of Ipswich is taking registrations for the Ipswich Rodeo that offers a $500 purse.  Entry fees are $15 for all events but the Ladies Barrel Race and the Wild Horse Race, which are only $10.

• The Aberdeen Jaycees will set up a coffee stop for weary travelers on Labor Day.  The stop will be at the Foster-Bell Company on east 6th Avenue from 2pm – 7pm.

• On the police blotter today—glass in a telephone booth at Melgaard Park was broken out sometime yesterday.  Three bicycles were reported stolen from different neighborhoods of Aberdeen.

National Headlines:

• Forest fires are raging in Yellowstone National Park and have already scorched nearly 400,000 acres in the park.  Officials have asked private helicopters crews to come to aid the 35 government copter crews already at the fire.

• “L.A. Law” has been nominated for a total of 19 Emmy Awards while “Golden Girls” and “Beauty and the Beast” each have 12 nominations.

State Headlines:

• The state’s computerized library network will be unveiled next week.  The system connects 10 libraries at the state’s colleges and universities as well as high school and public libraries and makes over a million resources available to all.  The state legislature appropriated 750,000 last year to fund this project.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Two sets of South Dakota twins will wrestle in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.  Dennis and Duane Koslowski from Doland and Bill and Jim Scherr of Mobridge.

• Gary Scofield, president of First Bank in Aberdeen, is the 1988 United Way Campaign Chairman.

• Kathy Eder is the new Executive Vice President of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce. 

• Aberdeen golfer Roger Legge has a 6-stroke lead over Mark Papstein also of Aberdeen after the first round of play in the Dakota Open golf tournament. (Legge goes on to win the tournament by 10 strokes)

• Stephanie Herseth of Houghton was crowned South Dakota’s Miss Teen and will compete in the national pageant in Hilo, Hawaii later this year.

• SD Congressman Tim Johnson is in town today as part of his Town and Country meetings.  He’ll be at the Aberdeen Senior Center to discuss Medicare and Social Security.

• Presentation College will have a new president this year, Brother Clarence Fioke, of Santa Fe, NM.

• State Fair headline attractions this year are Randy Travis and Reba McIntire.

National Headlines:

• President Dwight Eisenhower is in England and visited Queen Elizabeth at her Balmoral Scotland Castle.

• The first test flight of the new X15 rocket plane was delayed today due a fuel leak.  The X15 will ultimately take a man more than 100 miles above the earth at a speed of nearly 4000mph.

State Headlines:

• Thirty-nine SD Counties including Brown County have been declared disaster areas due to this summer’s drought conditions. 

• The new Miss South Dakota, Meredith Auld (eventually Mrs. Tom Brokaw), will be honored by her hometown of Yankton with a special program prior to her leaving for Atlantic City, NJ to participate in the Miss America Pageant.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The bookmobile will begin making regular stops at rural schools throughout Brown County and will be at the Day County Fair next week as well.

• The Aberdeen Livestock is hosting an open house in its re-location sales pavilion, which is among the largest and finest in the upper Midwest.

• Harry Liem Sporting Goods located at 22 3rd Ave SW in Aberdeen has the following specials on boys’ gym suits for back to school. Gold shirt $1.25, Blue shorts $1.25, Converse white gym shoes $5.95, and a carryall bag $1.95.

• Work continues spreading concrete on the new Highway 281 north of Aberdeen.  Crews advance about 1800 feet each day.

• Two long-time employees of Aberdeen Motors at 215 S Lincoln, Julius Kirchenmann and Stuart Manning, have purchased the dealership.  The new owners will transfer their Imperial and Chrysler dealerships to the Martyn-Edwards Company at 301 South Lincoln.

• Formal training for the Gray Ladies, a Red Cross sponsored volunteer program, will be held at the Veterans Memorial Building on Lincoln Street.  Volunteers will receive 12 hours of formal training and practice their skills for 10 hours prior to being assigned a permanent service time at St. Lukes’ Hospital.

• The Aberdeen Sertoma Club is sponsoring a concert by the United States Marine Band next month.  The band will give two performances at the Civic Arena.

• A master plan to consolidate Brown County’s 73 school districts into four was unveiled today by Brown County School Superintendent Ruth Johnson.

• Redfield will host the state amateur baseball tournament next week.  Bleachers at the ballpark have been rebuilt after being destroyed by fire
