• The last episode of  daytime drama (soap opera) “Search for Tomorrow” aired today after a 35 year run on NBC, making it the longest running daytime drama on TV.

State Headlines:

• The Granite City Chapter of the Jaycees made up of 144 inmates at the SD state peniteniary hosted a Christmas party for 28 clients of  United Cerebral Palsy of South Dakota to assure these people had a Merry Christmas this year.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The 42-member Selby High School Band will be among those performing at the inauguration of Governor-elect George Mickelson.

• Plans for a 41’ tall snowman have been put on hold due to lack of snow according to this year’s Snow Queen committee.  The group hoped to constuct the snowman in early December and have it up through the January festival on a vacant lot on the east side of the Super City Mall. 

• Roncalli’s Kathy Traphagen has been named to the All-Conference Basketball team by area coaches.

• Movies playing today:  “Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home” at the Capitol, “Heartbreak Ridge” with Clint Eastwood and “The Golden Child” with Eddie Murphy at the Cinema Twins.  “An American Tail” is showing at the Cinema for matinees only.

• Shopko’s Entertainment Sale features “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Beverly Hills Cop” on video cassette for only $14.99 or “Flashdance” and “Elton John, the Nighttime Concert” on video cassette for only $18.99.

National Headlines:

• Funeral arrangements are being made for former President Harry Truman who passed away yesterday at age 88.

• Disney World closed its gates for 2 hours due to a capacity crowd of 50,000 post Christmas visitors.  The attractions many parking lots were full with over 12,000 vehicles.

State Headlines:

• The Rapid City Flood was included in the nation’s top 10 news stories of 1972.  It came in at number 9.
• The next legislative session will attempt to raise SD’s minimum wage from $1.25 to $1.60 per hour to conform with the federal wage increase.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The Aberdeen Jaycees are sponsoring a “Hidden Snowman” contest for anyone younger than 15.  Small snowmen of different colors have been hidden in public areas of the city.  Location clues will be published each day in the American News until all four snowmen are found.  Finders will be awarded a $25 savings bond. 

• Fritz Lahman, owner of Lahman’s Manufacturing in Hecla, sponsored a one-day whirlwind trip to Las Vegas for all of his employees and their spouses. They all left today on a DC-9 chartered by Lahman for the occasion.

• The Ranch Cafe on East 6th Avenue is offering the following steak dinner specials: a 5 oz. beef tenderloin for $1.99 and a 7 oz ribeye for $1.89.

• Taco John’s reminds you that tacos are only $.30 and softshells are always $.35.

• Reserved Seat Tickets for the Snow Queen contest are available at Kirkpatrick’s Jewelry.  Balcony seating is $3 or $4 and main floor seating is $3, $4, and $5.

• Northern’s Rich Andrezejewski (An-drew-jes-key) has been named South Dakota’s top college athlete for 1972.  During his college career he lettered 4 times in football, and 3 times in basketball, baseball and track

National Headlines:

• The Neilson ratings are out for the week.  The top 5 TV shows are:  “Laverne and Shirley” is in the number 1 spot followed by “Happy Days”, “MASH”, “One Day at a Time”, and “Mork and Mindy”.

• Hamburger prices are expected to rise to $1.80 per pound beginning January 1. Current prices are about $1.30 per pound.

State Headlines:

• The Federal Aviation Administration plans to establish new radar services at airports in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Northern Basketball coach, Bob Wachs, picked up his 400th win today as his Wolves defeated Dickenson State College 80-77 in the Huron Holiday Basketball Tournament.

• No need to hunt pheasants.  Get your frozen pheasants directly from the Frederick Ringneck Ranch.  One bird $6.00; 4 or more $5.50 each.

• Cindy Schwan has been appointed as the chief deputy in the Brown County Assessor’s office by the Brown County Commission.

• 1979 dog licenses must by purchased by 5pm tomorrow.  A penalty of $1 per day will be charged through January 15 for those failing to meet the deadline. 

• See Ryan O’Neal in “Oliver’s Story”, the sequel to “Love Story” at the Cinema 1 theater.  Adult tickets are $2.75, children are $1.25.  “Lord of the Rings” is showing at the Orpheum for an extended engagement. 

• Jason Lien,  Nick & Joe Berbos are among this year’s entrants in the Governor’s Cup Snowmobile Race to be held as part of the Snow Queen Festival.  The race covers 225 miles taking riders from Aberdeen to Mobridge and back in a two day ride.

National Headlines:

• At 11:59pm tonight an illuminated ball will slide down a flagpole on the Allied Chemical Tower in New York’s Time Square--a tradition dating back to 1906. 

State Headlines:

• Officials in Sioux Falls announced today that a 356,000 square foot indoor shopping mall will be built on 40 acres of land on 41st Street and Western Avenue.  Work on the “Western Mall” is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 1967.  Anchor stores include Montgomery Ward and Gambles. 

Local/Area Headlines:

• Have a roller skating party at Skateland in southwest Aberdeen.

• High scorers in the Pepsi-Cola Holiday School Bowling Tourney at the Village Bowl included:  Karen Youngerman 607, Jane Tompkins 576,  and Carly Fossum 573.

• Central’s Eagles defeated Madison 72-61.  Aberdeen’s Dan Wollman had 22 points, Dan Holdhusen had 11, and Steve Weflen added 10.  Aberdeen Roncalli defeated Lemmon 50-38.  Jim Heil had 18 for the Cavs and Dennis Jangula added 10.
