November 24, 1987

National Headlines:

• ABC will televise a special tonight honoring the 20th anniversary of “Rolling Stone Magazine”, the magazine of rock and roll.  The special will include vintage video clips of some of the biggest names in rock and roll and interviews with those same performers now.  Included in the special will be Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Sting, Grace Slick, George Harrison, Neal Young, Lou Reed and Joni Mitchell.

State Headlines:

• Voters in the state have not yet become too interested in the state’s primary election to be held in February.  For the first time in history, South Dakota will vote early in the presidential primary season rather than near the end of it.

Local/Area Headlines:

• New businesses in Aberdeen include a second McDonald’s Restaurant on north 2nd Street, Snacks Etc. at 118 south Lincoln and Food-N-Fuel on south 5th Street.

• There will only be 400 tickets sold for this year’s Dakota Dazzler fundraising event for Dakota Midland Hospital.  Each $50 ticket includes dinner and a chance to win an all expense paid trip to Hawaii for two.

• Volunteers have been busy in Bristol cooking 14 turkeys and 100 pies for the community’s 4th annual Thanksgiving dinner to be held in the school gym.  About 500 people are expected to eat at the event.

• The Barnett Center on the campus of NSU is home to a new electronic scoreboard built by Daktronics of Brookings.  The scoreboard is composed of nearly 2,000 red, green, blue, and white bulbs and can be programmed to deliver up to 16 different messages.  This is one of two full color display boards in the state—the other is in Rapid City at Rushmore Plaza.

• Former Governor Bill Janklow is the featured speaker at tonight’s graduation banquet for the Leadership Aberdeen class. 

• At the movies:  “Dirty Dancing” and Molly Ringwald in “ The Pick Up Artist” at the Cinema Twins and “The Running Man” starring Arnold Schwarzenneger at the Capitol.

• On TV tonight:  “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”, and “The Gambler III—the Legend Continues”

November 25, 1975

National Headlines:

• Thousands of Californians have fled their homes in the wake of a wildfire that has burned over 57,000 acres so far.  Twenty homes have been destroyed and thirty more have suffered major damage and a thick veil of smoke is hanging over Los Angeles.

• It will cost 13 cents to mail a first class letter beginning next month.

State Headlines:

• South Dakota motorists will have new license plates to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial starting January 1.  The new plates show blue numbers and letters, red South Dakota, and a blue Mt. Rushmore insignia.  Drivers will use these plates for five years rather than having to purchase new plates each year.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Koch’s Chain Saw Service is busy hanging holiday decorations on Aberdeen’s Main Street that include 90 pound angels and 50 pound stained glass windows.   The Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce is responsible for the decorations.

• The Harlem Globetrotters will be in Aberdeen next week for a game at the Civic Arena.  Tickets are $4.50.

• John Sveen of Sveen Oil is the new president of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce.

• Get Yahtzee, America’s latest game craze, at Woolworth’s for only $1.99.

• Get “Pong”, the game you play on your TV set, at Sears for only $99.95.

• Goodman News on Main Street Aberdeen has a new shipment of lava lights just in time for holiday giving.

• Rita Peterson is the new Snow Queen representing Conde.

• City crews are working on the public ice skating rinks at Simmons, Lincoln, Moccasin Creek, Howard-Hedger and Mother Joseph Manor so they can open next week.  There will no be skating rink at Wylie this year due to lack of use last year.

• Top records this week:  “That’s the Way I Like It” KC and the Sunshine Band, “Island Girl” Elton John, “The Way I Want to Touch You” Captain and Tennille,  “Nights on Broadway” Bee Gees, and “Who Loves You” The Four Seasons.

November 26, 1983

National Headlines:

• The top five TV shows according to the latest Neilson ratings are 1)  “The Day After” a movie about the aftermath of a nuclear war, 2)  “Dallas”   3)  “Simon and Simon”  4)  “The A-Team” and 5)  “Falcon Crest”

• The hot Christmas toy for this year is the new Cabbage Patch Kid dolls.  The chubby, moon-faced dolls sell for $21.88 and each is unique and comes with its own “birth certificate”

State Headlines:

• The Lead High School Newspaper, The Nugget, won first place in a national competition.  It was judged against papers from high schools throughout the country.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Area football players named to the 11AA All State team include Herman Schneiders of Mobridge, Jeff From of Redfield, Darren Weber of Aberdeen Roncalli, Scot Hagen of Sisseton and Jeff Fisher of Milbank.

• Kendall Hoellein of Warner was named to the 9A All State Football Team.

• The Aberdeen Dairy Queen is putting on an addition on the front of its building and will also add a drive up window.  These improvements will be complete when the business opens again next spring.

• Voters in Selby will go to the polls next month to decide whether or not to allow open burning.

• It now costs $.50 to park for 10 hours in the city-owned parking lot south of the Municipal Building.  That’s double the previous rate.  There is a coin operated gate at the entrance to the lot. 

• Wendy’s, owned locally by Curt Frederickson and Jim Koehler, will open next week.  The restaurant will employ 75 people full and part time.

• George P. Sullivan was named Jaycee of the month.

• Curtis Mathes Home Entertainment Store has state-of-the-art VCRs with remote controls for only $599. 

• The Gettysburg High School drama department will present “The Wizard of Oz” this weekend. 

• At the Movies:  “The Big Chill” and “All the Right Moves” at the Cinema Twins.

National Headlines:

• NBC’s “Meet the Press” has celebrated its 20th anniversary on television making it the oldest network show.

• Instructions for 30 graduates of “Santa Claus school” in New York include be neat, sweet-tempered, don’t argue, and avoid onions and garlic.  Also wave to people, wish them a Merry Christmas, and keep your whiskers straight.

• The average price of a prescription filled at a US pharmacy is $3.48

State Headlines:

• The lobby of the state capitol is getting a new look.  The restaurant that has been in the lobby for 35 years will be relocated to the basement of the new annex so the lobby area can be transformed into a visitor center.

Local/Area Headlines:

• New area Snow Queens are Jaci Huffman, Selby; Carol Bauer, Eureka; Linda Pietz, Hosmer; Judy Bent, Faulkton; and Bonnie Wilson, Miller.

• Aberdeen TV and Appliance is having a sale on reel-to-reel tape recorders.  A monaural unit is $79.95, a four-track stereo model is only $179.95

• There will be no jackrabbit hunting season this year in Brown County and 16 other South Dakota counties because the rabbit population has dwindled considerably in those areas during the past winters.

• At the Movies:  Julie Andrews, James Garner and James Coburn in “Emily” at the Capitol; Milton Berle, Walter Brennan, Bob Denver, and Joey Bishop in “Who’s Minding the Store” at the Orpheum.
